Nuclear Power Project Status Update
During the 2023-24 period, India had ten nuclear reactors under construction/commissioning, of which three reactors with total capacity of 2100 MW have commenced commercial operation. The operationalized units include Kakrapar Atomic Power Project units 3 & 4 (2 × 700 MW) in Gujarat and Rajasthan Atomic Power Project unit 7 (1 × 700 MW) in Rawatbhata.
Since 2023-24, construction has commenced on two additional units at Kaiga (Kaiga-5 & 6 with 2 × 700 MW capacity), bringing the current nuclear power construction portfolio to ten reactors totaling 8000 MW capacity. The projects under construction include: RAPP-8 (1 × 700 MW) in Rajasthan; Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant units 3 & 4 (2 × 1000 MW) and units 5 & 6 (2 × 1000 MW) in Tamil Nadu; Fast Breeder Reactor-1 (1 × 500 MW) in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu; Kaiga-5 & 6 (2 × 700 MW) in Karnataka; and Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana units 1 & 2 (2 × 700 MW) in Haryana.
The enactment of the SHANTI Act in 2025 will enable wider participation of entities in the nuclear power sector, including private industries and research institutions, towards fostering growth in the energy sector.
