Postal employee organizations representing the Department of Posts met with Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh to discuss the transformation of India Post and various employee-related matters. The delegation hailed the government for reinventing India Post into a modern, citizen-centric service network and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for significantly expanding the organization's role beyond traditional mail delivery.
During the interaction at Kartavya Bhawan on September 14, 2026, the representatives highlighted India Post's expanded service portfolio including delivery within 24 hours for applicable services, Aadhaar-related facilities, PAN and Passport Seva services, doorstep banking, and digital pension services. They emphasized how these changes have brought a wide range of citizen-centric services closer to people across the country, particularly strengthening the postal network's public-service role.
Dr Jitendra Singh stated that India Post's nationwide network represents a key asset for last-mile public service delivery and can further strengthen government-citizen connectivity. He noted the changing role of postmen who are increasingly delivering banking and other essential services directly to citizens. The expansion of India Post Payments Bank and doorstep banking has enabled the postal network to take financial services to villages and households, allowing citizens to access banking facilities closer to their homes.
The Minister recalled India Post's important role during the COVID-19 pandemic when the network continued providing essential services despite the nationwide lockdown. Postal personnel delivered banking services and cash to citizens' homes, while postal vehicles and infrastructure were utilized for delivery and movement of essential medical and protective supplies.
The delegation raised various service-related and organizational matters including issues relating to verification and recognition of employee organizations, representation in departmental forums, pensioner concerns, and certain long-pending service matters. Dr Singh responded that matters requiring examination would be considered through the appropriate administrative process, keeping in view applicable rules as well as legal and financial implications.
Both parties discussed the need to further strengthen delivery of citizen-centric services through the postal network and make effective use of its vast nationwide reach in support of government initiatives. The delegation expressed willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at maximizing the postal network's utilization for public-service delivery and government programs.
