India Post Transformation and Employee Meeting

Representatives of All India employee organisations of the Department of Posts met with Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh at Kartavya Bhawan, New Delhi, to discuss the transformation of postal services and employee-related matters. The employee organizations hailed the government for 'reinventing' India Post and specifically thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for turning it into a modern, citizen-centric service network that now goes far beyond traditional mail delivery.

The delegation highlighted significant expansion of India Post's service portfolio over the past decade, including delivery within 24 hours in applicable services, Aadhaar-related facilities, PAN services, Passport Seva services, doorstep banking, and digital pension services. These changes have significantly expanded India Post's role and brought a wide range of citizen-centric services closer to people across the country, particularly strengthening its public-service role in rural areas through banking and financial services at the doorstep.

Dr Jitendra Singh emphasized that India Post's nationwide network represents a key asset for last-mile public service delivery, noting that the transformation is reflected in the changing role of the postman who now increasingly delivers banking and other essential services directly to citizens. The Minister specifically highlighted the expansion of India Post Payments Bank and doorstep banking that has enabled the postal network to take financial services to villages and households, along with expanded services such as Digital Life Certificates for pensioners.

The Minister recalled India Post's critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the postal network continued providing essential services despite the nationwide lockdown. Postal personnel delivered banking services and cash to citizens' homes, while postal vehicles and infrastructure were utilized for delivery and movement of essential medical and protective supplies.

The delegation raised various service-related and organizational matters concerning postal employees, including issues relating to verification and recognition of employee organizations, representation in departmental forums, pensioners, and certain long-pending service matters. Specific categories of employees and service benefits were discussed, with Dr Jitendra Singh committing that matters requiring examination would be considered through appropriate administrative process, keeping in view applicable rules as well as legal and financial implications.

The interaction also covered strengthening delivery of citizen-centric services through the postal network and making effective use of its vast nationwide reach in support of government initiatives. The delegation expressed willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at making greater use of the postal network for public-service delivery and government programs.
