India Highlights Agricultural Achievements at BRICS Ministers Conference
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan addressed the inaugural session of the two-day BRICS agriculture ministers conference in Indore, presenting India's agricultural achievements and commitment to global cooperation. The minister emphasized India's approach under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, based on principles of peace and coordination rather than conflict, and highlighted the spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (world as one family) and 'Atithi Devo Bhava' (guest is god) as foundational to India's global engagement.
India's agricultural sector has registered an average annual growth of nearly 4.5% over the last decade, with total foodgrain production reaching 376 million tonnes. Specific production achievements include wheat production of nearly 118 million tonnes, horticulture production exceeding 378 million tonnes, and fish production surpassing 19 million tonnes. The sector employs approximately 43% of India's workforce, making it a critical pillar of the economy.
Small and marginal farmers constitute 87% of India's farming community, and their empowerment is central to India's agricultural strategy. The government is implementing multiple support programs including the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana providing direct financial assistance, Kisan Credit Card scheme, and crop insurance programs. India operates the world's largest food security program, ensuring food security for a large section of the population.
Sustainable agriculture initiatives include the nationwide 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' campaign promoting natural farming, balanced use of chemical fertilizers, and soil health preservation. The minister highlighted women's participation through Self-Help Groups and initiatives like 'Drone Didi' enabling technological access, while youth engagement through innovation, startups, and agri-entrepreneurship is modernizing the sector.
The conference focused on addressing global challenges including climate change, pressure on natural resources, rising input costs, and agricultural market uncertainties. Minister Chouhan appealed for BRICS collaboration in empowering small farmers, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural development through experience exchange, technological cooperation, and policy dialogue.
