President Droupadi Murmu concluded her state visits to Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania with a significant stop in Bucharest on July 23, 2026. This marked the first state visit by an Indian president to Romania in nearly three decades, accompanied by Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, and Members of Parliament Dr. Dinesh Sharma and Vijay Baghel.
At the Cotroceni Palace, President Murmu was formally received by Romanian President Nicusor Dan and accorded a ceremonial welcome. The leaders held productive one-on-one and delegation-level talks covering all major dimensions of the India-Romania bilateral partnership. They agreed to further deepen cooperation across priority areas for both countries, building on what President Murmu described as a warm and enduring friendship founded on mutual trust and strong people-to-people ties spanning over seven decades.
Economic cooperation was emphasized as a crucial pillar of the partnership. Both leaders agreed to promote trade and investment, strengthen resilient supply chains, and encourage closer collaboration between their business communities. A specific target was set to double bilateral trade over the next three years. President Murmu highlighted Romania's importance as an EU partner and stated that the prospective India-EU Free Trade Agreement would open unprecedented opportunities for industries and skilled professionals from both nations.
Three important agreements were signed to bolster education, culture, and people-to-people contacts. These include expanded joint research and development under a Programme of Cooperation in Science and Technology, the establishment of an Indian Studies Chair at the University of Bucharest supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and a decision by the Indian government to double the number of training opportunities for Romania under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme. To commemorate the upcoming 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2028, both sides agreed to designate the occasion as the 'India–Romania Year of Innovation.'
The President's itinerary for July 24, 2026, includes addressing the India-Romania Business Forum and visits to the Parliament of Romania and the Bucharest University of Economic Studies.
