Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh addressed the session on System and Synthetic Biology at the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, emphasizing India's significant potential in gene research and biotechnology. He stated that India's rich genetic diversity and remarkable genetic and phenotypic profile position the country as an important global resource for gene research, with other nations expected to look towards India for its unique genetic resources in the coming years.
The Minister highlighted how India's diverse genetic foundation provides valuable opportunities for scientific research, particularly in understanding variations in disease patterns and exploring new possibilities in healthcare innovation. He stressed the critical need to build domestic capabilities in emerging areas of biotechnology, specifically mentioning the importance of strengthening indigenous technological capabilities in gene synthesis to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers for specialized research requirements.
Dr. Singh emphasized the government's high priority on research and innovation, noting India's considerable scientific talent. He called for strengthening support systems required to advance research, including greater industry participation and funding for promising scientific work. The Minister also discussed the growing convergence of disciplines, emphasizing the need to bring together biology, engineering, mathematics, and other areas of expertise for interdisciplinary collaboration as scientific research moves toward more complex applications.
Referring to advances in nuclear medicine, Dr. Singh discussed provisions under the recently enacted SHANTI Act that open nuclear medicine research to private-sector participation, creating opportunities for further research and industry engagement. The session included Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and brought together scientists and experts to discuss the potential of system and synthetic biology and the development of emerging biotechnology capabilities in India.
ESTIC 2026 serves as a platform that brings together scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, start-ups, and young researchers to strengthen the interface between scientific research, technological innovation, and national development, encouraging collaboration and supporting the translation of scientific knowledge into practical applications.
