India's Nuclear Power Generation Status
India currently has 24 nuclear power reactors in commercial operation with a total installed capacity of 8,780 MW. The performance data covers the period from 2019-20 to 2023-24, during which nuclear power plants demonstrated superior operational efficiency compared to thermal power plants nationwide.
Operational Performance Metrics
During the five-year period from 2019-20 to 2023-24, the average Plant Load Factor (PLF) of nuclear power plants (excluding periods of major refurbishment) exceeded the average all-India thermal PLF. This comparison specifically excluded gas-based power plants, with data sourced from Central Electricity Authority (CEA) reports. The Kakrapar Atomic Power Station Unit 4 (KAPS-4) commenced commercial operation in March 2024 and was excluded from this performance comparison period.

This operational data was formally disclosed by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office and Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, who also holds portfolios for Atomic Energy and Space. The information was provided in a written reply to a parliamentary question in the Rajya Sabha on July 30, 2026.
