India's Steel Sector Q1 FY26 Performance Overview
India's steel sector demonstrated positive growth trends during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (April-June 2026). Crude steel production reached 42.1 million tonnes (Mt), representing a 3.0% year-on-year increase from 40.8 Mt in the corresponding period last year (CPLY). Monthly production for June 2026 stood at 14.1 Mt, showing 3.9% growth compared to June 2025. Finished steel production showed stronger growth at 41.0 Mt for the quarter, up 5.9% YoY, with June 2026 production reaching 13.8 Mt (6.0% YoY growth). Hot metal production remained relatively stable at 23.5 Mt for the quarter, recording a modest 1.4% increase.
Production Capacity and Segment Analysis
The total steelmaking capacity in India remained steady at 221.9 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), supporting progress toward the National Steel Policy target of 300 Mtpa by 2030. The top seven producers (SAIL, RINL, NSL, TSL Group, AM/NS, JSL(JSPL), and JSW Group) with combined capacity of 117.4 Mtpa produced 23.2 Mt of crude steel, 21.8 Mt of finished steel, and 21.8 Mt of hot metal during the quarter. The remaining producers (104.5 Mtpa capacity) contributed 18.9 Mt of crude steel, 19.2 Mt of finished steel, and 1.7 Mt of hot metal. The public sector accounted for 13.9% of total capacity but contributed 15.7% of crude steel production and 13.0% of finished steel production.
Steel Price Trends and Market Dynamics
Steel prices showed mixed trends during the quarter. TMT (10 mm) prices declined from ₹63,893/tonne in April to ₹60,068/tonne in June (-4.7% MoM) but remained 4.4% higher than June 2025. HR Coil (2 mm) prices were relatively stable, decreasing marginally from ₹70,588 to ₹70,108/tonne (-0.5% MoM) but up 11.2% YoY. CR Coil (0.63 mm) prices declined from ₹78,410 to ₹77,053/tonne (-1.1% MoM) while showing 11.4% YoY growth. GP Sheet (0.63 mm) saw the most significant decline from ₹89,203 to ₹86,505/tonne (-2.8% MoM) but recorded the strongest YoY increase at 15.8%. All prices are inclusive of GST and represent averages from four metro cities—Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai—as of the second fortnight of each month.
Demand and Consumption Patterns
Finished steel consumption showed robust growth, reaching 41.6 Mt for the quarter, representing an 8.3% increase from 38.4 Mt in CPLY. Monthly consumption in June 2026 stood at 14.2 Mt, showing 7.2% YoY growth, indicating sustained domestic demand for steel products across construction, automotive, and manufacturing sectors.
Trade Dynamics and Import-Export Position
India transitioned to a net importer of finished steel during April-June 2026. Imports surged significantly to 2.0639 million tonnes (000 t), representing a 49.2% increase from 1.3837 million tonnes in CPLY. In value terms, imports reached ₹20,214.5 crore, up 44.2% YoY. Exports also grew but at a slower pace, reaching 1.5928 million tonnes (31.4% increase from 1.2125 million tonnes) valued at ₹12,475.2 crore (27.6% growth). The significant import growth resulted in India maintaining a net importer position in quantity terms for the quarter.
Raw Material Price Movements
Domestic raw material prices showed mixed trends in June 2026. NMDC Iron Ore Baila Lump (65.5%, 10-40 mm) increased 3.6% to ₹5,700/tonne from ₹5,500/tonne in May 2026. NMDC Iron Ore Baila Fines (64%, -10 mm) rose 3.2% to ₹4,850/tonne from ₹4,700/tonne. MOIL Manganese Ore Lump (Mn 37%, Fe 7.5%) declined 5.0% to ₹19,505/tonne from ₹20,532/tonne. Scrap—HMS II decreased 4.4% to ₹40,665/tonne from ₹42,533/tonne.
Key Sector Indices Performance
The Nifty Metal Index averaged 12,971.9 in June 2026, declining 1.9% from May 2026 but showing strong 39.3% growth compared to June 2025. The PMI Manufacturing Index stood at 54.2 in June 2026, down 1.5% from May's 55.0 but indicating continued expansion (above 50). The Baltic Dry Index averaged 2,779.9 in June 2026, declining 8.8% from May's 3,048.9 but recording significant 64.9% growth compared to June 2025.
Policy and Industry Initiatives
