India's Wind Power Capacity and Generation Update
India's installed wind power capacity reached 57,443 MW as of June 30, 2026, according to data submitted by the Union Minister of State for Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The state-wise breakdown shows Gujarat leading with 16,086 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu (12,273 MW), Karnataka (8,896 MW), Maharashtra (6,318 MW), Rajasthan (5,516 MW), Andhra Pradesh (4,461 MW), Madhya Pradesh (3,686 MW), Telangana (128 MW), Kerala (71 MW), and others (4 MW).
Wind power generation during FY 2025-26 reached 106 billion units (106,699 MUs), showing significant growth from previous years. The state-wise generation data shows Gujarat produced 33,706 MUs, Tamil Nadu 24,200 MUs, Karnataka 18,804 MUs, Andhra Pradesh 8,902 MUs, Maharashtra 8,610 MUs, Rajasthan 7,345 MUs, Madhya Pradesh 4,706 MUs, Telangana 292 MUs, and Kerala 130 MUs.
Capacity Addition and Generation Trends
The data reveals substantial growth in both capacity addition and power generation over the past three financial years. In FY 2023-24, India added 3,253 MW of wind capacity with generation of 83 billion units. This increased to 4,151 MW capacity addition and 83 billion units generation in FY 2024-25. The most significant growth occurred in FY 2025-26 with 6,057 MW of new capacity added and generation jumping to 106 billion units.
Government Initiatives for Renewable Energy Development
The government has implemented multiple initiatives to promote renewable energy including wind energy. These include the Green Energy Corridor Scheme for funding new transmission lines and sub-station capacity for renewable power evacuation. Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges have been waived for inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects commissioned by June 30, 2025, with graded charges thereafter.
Additional measures include: preparation of transmission infrastructure plan till 2030; permitting 100% Foreign Direct Investment under automatic route; notification of Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) followed by Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) trajectory till 2029-30 with penalties for non-compliance; revised Standard Bidding Guidelines for solar, wind, hybrid and Firm & Dispatchable RE projects; Viability Gap Funding Scheme for Offshore Wind Energy Projects; Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 for net-metering; National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023; Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023; Revised Guidelines for prototype wind turbine models (June 12, 2025); Mechanism of Approved List of Models and Manufacturers; Electricity (Late Payment Surcharge) Rules; Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022 for consumers with 100 kW+ demand; Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) for RE power sale through exchanges; and mandatory power dispatch against Letter of Credit or advance payment to ensure timely payments to RE generators.
