Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth launched the indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel in New Delhi on July 31, 2026. The specialized fuel was developed jointly by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies to enhance mobility, safety, and operational availability of combat and logistics vehicles in extreme climatic conditions.
The XWG Diesel addresses the critical limitation of conventional diesel, which thickens and clogs fuel filters at very low temperatures, particularly affecting vehicle operations in high-altitude and snow-bound areas. The new fuel remains effective at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius and is compliant with BS-VI standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications. Notably, it can be used in the Indian Army's existing vehicle fleet without requiring any engine modification or re-homologation.
General Seth described the innovation as game-changing, highlighting that it would enhance operational readiness and mission reliability across extreme conditions. The fuel eliminates previously required practices to keep vehicles functional during severe winters, thereby improving both safety and personnel morale. The development was completed within one year, and the Army expressed confidence that this collaboration would lead to further specialized fuels for diverse operational requirements.
Beyond military applications, the technology will benefit civilian users in high-altitude and extreme winter regions by improving the reliability and safety of vehicles and equipment operating under severe climatic conditions. The development represents a significant step toward the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.
