Market Opening
On Monday, 20 July 2026, Indian equity markets opened lower. The Nifty 50 opened at 24,216.95, down 0.47%, while the BSE Sensex 30 fell to 77,610.43, a decline of 0.69%.
Currency and Commodity Movements
The USD/INR exchange rate rose to 96.555, up 0.29% against the dollar. Crude oil prices surged, with West Texas Intermediate climbing 2.20% to $83.58 per barrel and Brent crude gaining 2.43% to $90.24 per barrel. Gold prices slipped 1.67% to 4,030.32 rupees per ounce.
Drivers of the Session
The market weakness was attributed to the sharp rise in crude oil prices and the continued depreciation of the rupee, which together raise import costs and pose inflationary pressures. Elevated energy costs also risk widening the current‑account deficit.
Top Gainers and Losers
Among individual stocks, Tech Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Jio Financial Services recorded buying interest and were the leading gainers. Conversely, Hindalco Industries, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Wipro experienced selling pressure and were the top losers.
Outlook
Investors remain focused on the ongoing corporate earnings season, foreign institutional investor flows, global macro developments and geopolitical tensions. The Nifty Bank index is expected to stay in focus, and near‑term market direction will be shaped by corporate earnings releases, further movements in crude oil and the rupee, global monetary‑policy expectations and institutional fund flows.
