Indian Railways has approved a ₹497 crore project for doubling the 10.86 km Chouk-Karjat railway section in Maharashtra, which forms part of the Central Railway network. This infrastructure enhancement project is approved under the umbrella works for doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyover and bypass works aimed at augmenting the capacity of the railway network. The Chouk-Karjat section is a critical component of the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route, serving as an important corridor for both passenger and freight movement across the region.
The doubling of this currently single-line stretch will provide additional capacity and significantly improve train operations. Upon completion, the enhanced infrastructure is expected to facilitate the operation of five additional passenger trains in each direction per day, substantially increasing passenger transport capacity. For freight operations, the project will support additional freight traffic of 18.35 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) and help reduce detention of freight trains, improving operational efficiency and logistics throughput.
This investment reflects Indian Railways' continued strategic focus on strengthening railway infrastructure, enhancing network capacity, and improving both passenger and freight movement capabilities across key transportation corridors in Maharashtra.
