Indian Railways reported significant operational improvements in August 2026, demonstrating growth across both freight and passenger segments. Freight loading reached 137.9 million tonnes, representing a 5.4% year-on-year increase from August 2025's 130.9 million tonnes, while freight revenue grew by 6.27% during the same period. Commodity-specific growth was led by iron ore (12.1% increase), clinker (10.4%), domestic containers (9.2%), coal (6%), finished steel (4.9%), mineral oil (3.1%), fertilizers (1.6%), and balance other goods (8.2%).
The infrastructure expansion included the commissioning of five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals located at Shivlakha (Gujarat), Nalli (Tamil Nadu), Shaktinagar (Uttar Pradesh), Deoragram (Madhya Pradesh), and Brajrajnagar (Odisha), bringing the total commissioned terminals to 149 as of 31 August 2026. These terminals aim to improve last-mile freight connectivity, reduce avoidable movement, and enhance logistics efficiency for industrial and commercial locations.
Passenger services saw substantial expansion with 14 Amrit Bharat services regularized from special to regular status, increasing the total number of such services to 86. Key routes regularized include Subedarganj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Gorakhpur-Bandra Terminus, Gorakhpur-Delhi Junction, Ahmedabad-Bhagalpur, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Junction-Udhna Junction, and Dhanbad-Coimbatore. These services enhance connectivity between Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and other regions, providing affordable long-distance travel options.
Passenger traffic totaled 67.27 crore passengers in August 2026, up from 64.43 crore in August 2025. Suburban traffic showed particularly strong growth at 9.02%, reaching 38.01 crore passengers compared to 34.89 crore previously. To accommodate festival season demand, Indian Railways operated 144 trips of Rakshabandhan Special trains between 25-31 August 2026, a significant increase from the 48 trips operated during 8-14 August 2025.
