Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in railway safety with the successful commissioning of KAVACH Version 4.0 for the first time on South Central Railway. The upgradation from KAVACH Version 3.2 to Version 4.0 has been completed over 108 Route Kilometres on the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section of Hyderabad Division, marking a major advancement in indigenous Automatic Train Protection technology.
KAVACH 4.0 incorporates technological improvements based on experience gained from the deployment of Version 3.2 over 1,465 Route Kilometres on South Central Railway. Key enhancements include increased location accuracy for more precise train positioning, improved information of signal aspects in bigger yards for strengthened situational awareness, station-to-station KAVACH interface through Optical Fibre Cable for enhanced communication, and direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems for improved integration with signaling infrastructure.
The indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system is designed to enhance operational safety by assisting Loco Pilots in maintaining trains within prescribed speed limits and automatically applying brakes when required. KAVACH helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger, controls train speed in critical situations, reduces collision risk, and supports safer operations during inclement weather conditions. The system requires the highest safety certification level (Safety Integrity Level-4 or SIL-4) due to its technology-intensive nature.
Implementation involves comprehensive infrastructure deployment including Station KAVACH at stations and block sections, RFID tags throughout the track length, telecommunication towers throughout the section, Optical Fibre Cable laying along the track, and Loco KAVACH provision on locomotives. This successful commissioning represents an important step toward strengthening indigenous railway safety technology and expanding advanced Automatic Train Protection capabilities across the Indian Railways network, with plans for large-scale deployment.
