Railway Minister Reviews Recruitment Process and FY26 Hiring Outcomes

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a high-level review meeting with senior Indian Railways officials regarding the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) recruitment process, emphasizing the need for greater transparency, accuracy, and technology-driven systems. The review highlighted Indian Railways' significant recruitment achievements in FY 2025-26, where 43,781 candidates were recruited against 47,084 notified vacancies across six major categories through completed recruitment cycles.

The detailed breakdown of completed recruitments shows 18,799 vacancies for Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs) with 17,193 empaneled, 14,298 for Technicians with 13,416 empaneled, 452 for Sub-Inspectors with 450 empaneled, 4,208 for Constables with 4,205 empaneled, 7,951 for Junior Engineers (JE)/DMS/CMA with 7,333 empaneled, and 1,376 for Paramedical categories with 1,184 empaneled. The recruitment process involves complex, large-scale Computer Based Tests conducted across multiple cities and centers nationwide in multiple shifts and 15 languages to ensure accessibility and fairness.

Ongoing and Future Recruitment Timeline

Several major recruitment examinations are currently in progress with specific timelines: NTPC Graduate level (CEN 05/2024) for 8,113 vacancies has completed third stage CBAT/TST and expects document verification from May 2026 onward; NTPC Under-Graduate level (CEN 06/2024) for 3,445 vacancies completed exams in 19 days across 57 shifts with DV expected from June 2026; Ministerial & Isolated Categories (CEN 07/2024) for 1,036 vacancies has DV for non-teaching categories commenced.

Additionally, examinations with final selection expected in the next 6 months to 1 year include: Level-1 (CEN 08/2024) for 32,438 vacancies with first stage CBT from November 2025 to February 2026; Assistant Loco Pilots (CEN 01/2025) for 10,970 vacancies with first stage CBT from February to March 2026 targeting 150,000 candidates in second stage and 50,000 in third stage; Junior Engineer (CEN 05/2025) for 2,585 vacancies with first stage in February 2026 targeting 38,860 candidates in second stage.

Technology and Process Improvements

The Minister noted that the annual recruitment calendar with quarterly vacancy notifications has been well received by candidates, enabling better preparation planning and bringing predictability to the process. All departmental examinations are now conducted through Computer Based Test (CBT) mode, with plans to expand tablet-based testing for faster, more efficient, and user-friendly recruitment. The multi-language support already implemented across various cities and multiple shifts ensures wider accessibility for candidates from diverse linguistic backgrounds, preventing language from becoming a barrier to participation. The Minister directed RRBs to strengthen communication with candidates and promptly counter misinformation to maintain confidence in the recruitment process, reaffirming Indian Railways' commitment to a fair, transparent, and merit-based recruitment system supported by technology and continuous reforms.
