The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) executed 20 Collision Avoidance Manoeuvres (CAMs) in 2025 and has performed 9 such manoeuvres so far in 2026 to protect its satellite assets. This activity is necessary because 20 of India's 22 active satellites operating in Low Earth Orbit (below 2000 km altitude) face higher collision risks due to the denser space object population in this region.
A policy framework addressing state liability for third-party damages from Indian space objects, formulated by IN-SPACe, is currently under consideration. India actively participates in multiple international space debris management frameworks including the Inter-Agency Debris Coordination Committee (IADC), United Nations Working Group on Long Term Sustainability, Expert Group of Space Situation Awareness, International Academy of Astronautics Space Traffic Management Working Group, and International Astronautical Federation space debris working group.
ISRO has contributed substantially to the revised IADC space debris mitigation guidelines and announced India's Debris Free Space Mission initiative in 2024, with the goal of achieving zero debris by all Indian actors (government and private) in the foreseeable future. For tracking capabilities, the multi-object tracking radar at Sriharikota currently tracks large objects in Low Earth Orbit, while an upcoming optical telescope at Hanle, Ladakh under the NETRA project is nearing completion and will track objects of 30 cm or bigger at GEO altitude.
Additionally, Biomedical and Life Support Systems are being developed for the Human Spaceflight Programme and will be validated through Gaganyaan missions, with potential for future societal applications.
