Jammu and Kashmir Infrastructure Connectivity Development
The Press Information Bureau document provides a comprehensive overview of major infrastructure projects transforming connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. The region's challenging mountainous terrain is being overcome through significant investments in rail, road, and air infrastructure designed to integrate the region into India's economic mainstream.
Railway Connectivity Expansion
The centerpiece is the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, inaugurated in June 2025 at a cost of ₹43,780 crore. This 272-kilometer railway line spans eight districts and includes 36 tunnels covering 119 kilometers and 943 bridges. The project is fully electrified and has generated over 5 crore man-days of employment. The USBRL features several engineering marvels including the Chenab Rail Bridge, which at 1,315 meters long with a 467-meter arch span rises 359 meters above the riverbed, making it the world's highest railway arch bridge. The Anji Khad bridge represents India's first cable-stayed railway bridge with a 193-meter-high inverted 'Y' tower and total length of 473.25 meters. Tunnel T50, at 12.77 kilometers, is India's longest transportation tunnel connecting Khari and Sumber, constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method with safety features including CCTV every 50 meters and parallel escape tunnels connected every 375 meters.
Railway services have been enhanced with Vande Bharat Express operations between Katra and Srinagar beginning June 2025, extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026, reducing travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to under five hours. The trains have been augmented from 8 to 20 coaches with special designs for extreme weather conditions and seismic dampers for safety. Supporting infrastructure includes station redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at four locations: Budgam, Jammu Tawi, Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station. Future projects include a third line between Jalandhar Cantt. and Jammu Tawi (216 km), additional line between Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (78 km), and new railway line between Jammu/Reasi and Poonch (190 km).
Road Infrastructure Development
Road projects complement railway expansion, with 110 road projects covering 598.455 km under PMGSY-IV costing over ₹1,500 crore recently launched, benefiting 46,972 people across Udhampur–Kathua–Doda–Kishtwar region. These projects incorporate waste plastics in road construction for sustainability. Major tunnel projects include the Sonamarg (Z-Morh) Tunnel inaugurated in January 2025—a 6.4 km bi-directional tunnel with parallel escape tunnel and 5.5 km approach road costing over ₹2,700 crore at 2,634 meters altitude. The Zojila Tunnel is a 13.153-kilometer bi-directional tunnel under construction between Baltal and Minamarg on NH-1 by NHIDCL at ₹6,808 crore, elevated at 2,900–3,310 meters. Construction began October 2020 with main tunnel breakthrough achieved June 2026. The project includes modern safety systems, two twin tube uni-directional Nilgari tunnels (4.8 km total), eight cut-and-cover sections (2.350 km), four bridges (810 m total), and avalanche protection structures. It will reduce travel time between Sonamarg and Minamarg from two hours to 30 minutes. The Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel (formerly Chenani-Nashri Tunnel), operational since 2017, is India's longest operating highway tunnel at 9 km, reducing travel distance by 31 km and saving two hours travel time.
Highway network expansion includes the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway (667 km greenfield) with key sections inaugurated July 2026, reducing Delhi-Katra travel time from 14 to 6 hours. Other projects include Rafiabad–Kupwara Road (NH-701) widening and Shopian Bypass (NH-444, 8.925 km, ₹224.44 crore) to improve agricultural produce transportation.
Aviation Infrastructure Enhancement
Srinagar International Airport is undergoing ₹1,677 crore expansion approved February 2026, featuring a new 71,500 sqm terminal building handling 2,900 peak hour passengers and 10 million annually. The development includes 15 aircraft parking bays (one for widebody), multi-level parking for 1,000 cars, and incorporates traditional Kashmiri architecture with sustainability features targeting 5-star GRIHA rating. Regional connectivity is being extended through UDAN scheme airports at Udhampur and Kishtwar.
Economic Integration and Logistics
The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan facilitates multimodal logistics integration, with 142 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals commissioned nationwide including one operational in Samba, Jammu and Kashmir. In-principle approvals granted for three additional terminals at Kathua, Anantnag, and Jammu districts. These developments enable Kashmiri apples, saffron, handicrafts, and other products to reach national markets, supporting farmers and businesses while strengthening strategic positioning and disaster response capabilities.
