Inauguration
On 4 July 2026, the new terminal at Jodhpur Airport was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in the presence of the Governor of Rajasthan, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, the Union Minister of Culture, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, the Chief Secretary of Rajasthan, the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Secretary of AAI. The terminal, commissioned by AAI, spans 2,52,000 square feet and is designed to handle over two million passengers per annum.
Design and Architectural Highlights
The terminal was designed by the multidisciplinary architectural practice STHAPATI, headquartered in New Delhi and Lucknow. The façade incorporates Rajputana architectural elements such as a fluted dome topped with a kalasa on a lotus base, columns and multifoil arches, mirroring the region’s royal heritage. Inside, artworks inspired by Marwar paintings, Rajput‑style peacock murals and jharokha motifs were crafted by ‘Prastuti’ artist Mr Mahendra Kodwani. The spatial layout features island‑style check‑in counters, linear security checks and segregated service circulation to ensure intuitive wayfinding and operational efficiency.
Capacity and Operational Features
The terminal’s passenger handling capacity of 2 million passengers per year is supported by optimized baggage handling systems that minimise processing times. Service and staff movement routes are designed to operate independently of public zones, enhancing operational efficiency without intersecting passenger areas.
Sustainability Credentials
The terminal is being built to achieve GRIHA certification. Sustainable design strategies include deep overhangs to reduce heat gain, the use of Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC), energy‑efficient glazing and the installation of solar panels. Energy simulations indicate that the terminal will consume more than 50 % less energy than the benchmark for comparable airport buildings, reflecting a resource‑efficient, climate‑responsive approach.
Economic and Tourism Impact
The facility is positioned as a strategic catalyst for tourism‑led development in Western Rajasthan, expected to stimulate expansion of the hospitality sector and generate significant job creation. Enhanced connectivity is projected to bolster Jodhpur’s role within Rajasthan’s heritage triad of Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur, reinforcing the city’s status in India’s most‑visited cultural corridor and supporting future domestic and potential international routes.
