Press Release Summary
Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani, Chennai, announced that it successfully performed three complex robotic colorectal cancer surgeries on high‑risk obese patients between the ages of 45 and 60. Each patient weighed more than 100 kg and had a body‑mass index of 38‑40, together with comorbidities such as diabetes, underlying cardiac issues, previous abdominal surgeries and prior radiotherapy. The tumours were diagnosed as very low rectal cancers or colon tumours located deep within the pelvis, regions that are anatomically challenging, especially in overweight individuals.
The procedures were carried out on three consecutive days by Dr. Swaminathan Sambandham, a recognised robotic gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeon, supported by a multidisciplinary surgical and critical‑care team. Using a robotic minimally invasive technique, the team avoided large abdominal incisions; cancerous specimens were retrieved through the stoma site itself, eliminating the need for additional abdominal cuts. Dr. Sambandham stated that operating deep within the pelvis of obese patients with prior surgeries or radiation is extremely demanding, and that robotic surgery provides enhanced precision, better visualisation and greater control, allowing the procedures to be performed safely while significantly reducing trauma.
All three patients were mobilised early after surgery, experienced markedly less postoperative pain, and were discharged from the hospital after just four days – an outcome the hospital describes as highly notable for such complex colorectal cancer surgeries involving obese and medically compromised patients. Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co‑founder and Executive Director of the Kauvery Group of Hospitals, noted that traditionally these cases are associated with restricted operating space, higher chances of blood loss, wound complications, infections, prolonged recovery and increased post‑operative risks, but the completely robotic minimally invasive approach enabled early mobilisation and a four‑day discharge despite the complexity.
The hospital said that the successful completion of these three consecutive complex robotic cancer surgeries further strengthens Kauvery Hospital Vadapalani’s growing expertise in robotic gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer surgery. It affirmed its commitment to advancing minimally invasive cancer care by combining cutting‑edge robotic technology with highly specialised surgical expertise to deliver safer procedures, faster recovery and improved patient outcomes even in the most challenging cases.
