Press Release – Kauvery Hospital, Chennai (Nov 02 2026)
Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, Chennai, announced the successful treatment of a 63‑year‑old male patient suffering from severe pure native aortic valve regurgitation (PNAR). The regurgitation was caused by a perforation in one of the native aortic valve leaflets, and the patient’s medical history included a prior mitral valve replacement, adding considerable complexity to the case.
The hospital performed a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) using the specialised HANCHOR valve, marking the first instance where this valve has been employed for TAVR in a patient presenting this specific combination of clinical factors. The HANCHOR valve incorporates a balloon‑expandable frame coupled with a dedicated nitinol anchoring element designed to engage native valve leaflets and provide stable positioning even when surrounding anatomy offers limited calcific support.
During the procedure, the replacement valve was delivered via catheter and positioned within the patient’s existing aortic valve, allowing a minimally invasive approach that avoided conventional open‑heart surgery. Immediate post‑procedure evaluation reported:
- No residual aortic regurgitation,
- No valve stenosis,
- No paravalvular leak, and
- No significant abnormalities in cardiac electrical conduction.
The patient was discharged after a three‑day hospital stay.
Dr. Rajaram Ananantharaman, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Kauvery Hospital, explained that the limited calcium deposits typical of pure native aortic regurgitation make catheter‑based valve anchoring challenging, and that the HANCHOR valve’s dedicated anchoring mechanism was pivotal in achieving a successful outcome without residual leakage.
Commenting on the broader significance, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co‑founder and Executive Director of the Kauvery Group of Hospitals, emphasized the institution’s commitment to advancing patient care through clinical expertise, innovation, and the adoption of appropriate medical technologies, citing this case as an illustration of combining specialised treatment approaches with careful clinical assessment.
