The Thevara–Perandoor (TP) Canal, a 10‑km 19th‑century waterway in Kerala, is being restored under the TP Canal Restoration Programme launched in 2023.
The programme, led by Kochi Municipal Corporation and UNEP, uses floating wetlands, mangrove planting and monitoring to reduce pollution and enhance biodiversity.
Over 400 students from 55 schools joined awareness programmes, and local fisherwomen received training in mangrove care, waste management and monitoring.
The restored canal will include walkways, gardens and spaces, supporting tourism, fisheries and flood resilience, aligning with UN’s 2050 pollution‑free ocean goal.
