The Lok Sabha Secretariat organized a tribute ceremony in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on October 2, 2026, to mark the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Jagat Prakash Nadda, and Kiren Rijiju, along with Opposition leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries paid floral tributes at the portraits of the two national leaders.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed more than 500 school students from across India participating in the 'Know Your Leader' programme. In his address, Birla emphasized the enduring relevance of Gandhi's principles of truth, non-violence, and Satyagraha, and Shastri's values of simplicity, discipline, and his iconic slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan'. He called upon the youth to draw inspiration from these ideals and contribute to building a developed India (Viksit Bharat) through determination, ethical conduct, and social responsibility. Thirty-six selected students also spoke about the lives and contributions of both leaders.
Earlier in the day, Speaker Birla visited Rajghat and Vijay Ghat to pay respects at the samadhis of Gandhi and Shastri, respectively. The event was primarily ceremonial and inspirational, focusing on connecting youth with India's democratic heritage and the ideals of its historical leaders.
