Overview

The press release issued on 30 October 2026 from Thiruvananthapuram details the launch of The Legacy of Truth, a documentary chronicling the five‑decade public career of veteran Kerala politician M. M. Hassan. The film is directed by Maqbool Rahman, produced by Nisha M. H. under the banner Purpose First, with cinematography and editing by Anish Lal.

Documentary Details

The Legacy of Truth revisits Hassan’s evolution from student activist in the Kerala Students Union to senior political leader, emphasizing his social‑welfare initiatives alongside legislative milestones. According to statements from the filmmaker, Rahman received a Best Director honour and the documentary secured first position in its category at a Malaysian international film event, providing the work with international recognition and exposure beyond Kerala.

Social Initiatives – Janasree Sustainable Development Mission

Hassan chaired the Janasree Sustainable Development Mission, an organisation aimed at community participation, self‑employment and economic empowerment. In 2009 the mission announced an ambitious target to train 10 lakh (one million) members, focusing on small‑scale entrepreneurship, vocational training, micro‑finance and income‑generating activities such as food processing, soap production, umbrella manufacturing and paper‑bag making. The programme also promoted organic vegetable cultivation in household gardens to improve food safety, reduce dependence on external supplies and encourage healthier agricultural practices. These efforts were presented as ways to enhance women’s financial agency, provide families with additional economic security and foster participatory community development.

Political Career Highlights

Hassan’s political trajectory includes five terms as a Member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, ministerial responsibilities under former Chief Minister A. K. Antony, and leadership roles within the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and the United Democratic Front (UDF). He served as KPCC president from 2017 to 2018 and as UDF convenor from 2020 to 2025. Earlier, he emerged from the Kerala Students Union, establishing himself as a prominent figure in state politics.

Expatriate Welfare and Migration Issues

During his tenure as Minister for Non‑Resident Keralites’ Affairs, Hassan was associated with the institutional framework supporting overseas Malayalis, notably the NORKA and NORKA‑ROOTS schemes. His interventions addressed travel costs, welfare requirements and the need for stronger engagement between expatriate communities and the Kerala government, reflecting the state’s long‑standing reliance on remittances from Gulf‑based workers.

Public Advocacy and Protest

In December 2004 Hassan undertook a 23‑hour fast in Thiruvananthapuram to protest forced hartals, arguing that political shutdowns adversely affect daily‑wage earners, small businesses and ordinary citizens by restricting their ability to work, travel and earn livelihoods.

Additional Social Concerns

Janasree’s broader agenda also encompassed initiatives to combat alcohol and drug abuse, promote family well‑being and raise community awareness about harmful social practices, underscoring Hassan’s view that financial development must be complemented by public‑health and social‑support measures.
