Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, conducted a comprehensive review of the power sector for Madhya Pradesh on June 19, 2026. The meeting was attended by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Sh. Mohan Yadav, Urban Development and Housing Minister Sh. Kailash Vijayvargiya, Power Minister Sh. Pradyumna Singh Tomar, along with senior state government officials, Ministry of Power officials, and Power Sector CPSE representatives.
Key Focus Areas
The Union Minister highlighted critical areas requiring detailed action plans from the State Power department, particularly focusing on the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and the operational and financial parameters of DISCOMs. He emphasized the necessity for timely payment of subsidies and clearance of government department dues within the same financial year, advising the state to establish a robust mechanism for regular settlement.
Smart Metering and Billing Efficiency
Progress on smart metering implementation was reviewed with specific instructions for expeditious deployment across government establishments, urban local bodies, and commercial and industrial consumers. The Minister recommended phased conversion to prepaid mode and emphasized improving billing efficiency through comprehensive metering of all agricultural feeders.
Capacity Planning and Scheme Implementation
The review covered resource adequacy status, including grid and storage planning, with advice to tie up additional capacity to meet growing demand. Progress under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was assessed, and the state was urged to meet its targets under this scheme. For PM-KUSUM, the Minister advised leveraging the scheme for progressive reduction of agricultural subsidy.
Nuclear Power Development
The Union Minister highlighted the need to expedite identification of sites for nuclear power capacity under the SHANTI Act framework, noting that sincere implementation efforts would significantly contribute to making state DISCOMs financially viable and the power sector self-sufficient.
The Minister for Power of Madhya Pradesh assured full commitment to implementing all sanctioned works and improving overall power sector performance, while the Union Minister assured continued support and cooperation from the Government of India for the state's overall development.
