Major Ports Turnaround Time Performance
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported significant improvements in vessel turnaround time across India's major ports. The average turnaround time decreased from 52.87 hours in 2021-22 to 48.84 hours in 2025-26, representing a consistent efficiency improvement over the five-year period.
Port-Specific Performance Details
Jawaharlal Nehru Port demonstrated the best performance among major ports, maintaining turnaround times between 26-28.47 hours throughout the period, with 2025-26 at 27.43 hours. Cochin Port showed consistent efficiency with turnaround times improving from 34.64 hours in 2021-22 to 32.33 hours in 2025-26. Several ports showed variable performance: Deendayal Port improved from 60.96 hours in 2021-22 to 57.86 hours in 2025-26 after peaking at 77.28 hours in 2022-23; Mumbai Port reduced from 73.00 to 64.05 hours; Visakhapatnam Port improved from 73.83 to 65.32 hours.
Global Ranking Achievement
According to the World Bank's Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025, Jawaharlal Nehru Port achieved global recognition with a ranking of 22nd, positioning it comparably with Singapore (21st) and Shanghai (23rd), and significantly higher than Rotterdam (333rd). This ranking provides an objective assessment of container port performance based on vessel time in port.
Government Efficiency Measures
The Government has implemented several measures to further improve port efficiency, including construction of new berths and terminals, mechanization and modernization of existing infrastructure, optimization of berths and yards, and creation of supporting infrastructure such as central parking plazas. The One Nation One Port Process (ONOP) has been implemented to standardize and simplify port procedures across all ports, enhancing operational efficiency and contributing to reduced vessel turnaround times.
