The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants in Delhi for proper utilization of cow dung. The signing ceremony was attended by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah, Union Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairying Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Shri Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, and senior officials from Central and Delhi Governments.
The agreement is positioned as a model initiative for making all major cities in the country clean and represents an important step towards fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolve to purify the Yamuna River. The initiative aims to ensure that no cow dung enters the Yamuna River in the future through proper disposal of waste from approximately 1.25 lakh cattle.
The CBG plants will be established at three specific waste disposal plants: Nangli, Ghoga-Goyla, and Ghazipur. A key provision of the agreement includes payment of ₹1 per kilogram to livestock farmers for cow dung supplied, which is expected to increase farmers' income while improving urban cleanliness.
The initiative is expected to generate multiple benefits including improved cleanliness, production of Compressed Bio-Gas, and a strong boost to organic farming. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that by December 2028, the government will ensure that not a single litre of dirty water enters the Yamuna River, with work already begun on approximately 80 treatment plants in Delhi for the purification of sewer water and industrial waste.
This initiative is described as highly significant for ensuring cleanliness in urban areas and increasing income for crores of livestock farmers across the country, with potential applicability to all metropolitan cities nationwide.
