The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishing Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants in Delhi to utilize cow dung effectively. The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with senior central and Delhi government officials.
This initiative directly supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Yamuna River purification resolve by preventing cow dung from entering the river. The program includes payment of ₹1 per kilogram of cow dung to livestock farmers, potentially increasing income for crores of farmers nationwide. Approximately 80 treatment plants are already underway in Delhi for purifying sewer water and industrial waste, with a target to ensure zero dirty water entry into Yamuna River by December 2028.
Cow dung processing will occur at three specific waste disposal plants: Nangli, Ghoga-Goyla, and Ghazipur. The project aims to generate Compressed Bio-Gas while improving urban cleanliness and providing a significant boost to organic farming practices. The agreement is positioned as a model for clean city initiatives across all major metropolitan areas in India, with potential future expansion to benefit rural livestock farmers through cow dung processing.
