The 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) hosted a panel discussion titled "Fast Film: Is Micro Drama the Fast Fashion of Cinema?" on June 16, 2026, in Mumbai. Moderated by actor Sheena Chauhan, the session featured filmmaker Sameer Mody, actors Archana Kavi and Ujjawal Kumar, and filmmaker Rafael Stemplewski examining the rise of micro drama content. Festival Director Prakash Magdum highlighted the importance of understanding emerging storytelling formats in the evolving media landscape.
The panelists unanimously agreed that micro drama represents a natural evolution of storytelling driven by changing audience habits and increased mobile device usage. Sameer Mody noted the format gained significant momentum during COVID-19 as creators observed rising mobile content consumption, describing micro dramas as requiring precision, creativity, strong writing, compelling performances, and sharp editing within limited durations. Archana Kavi observed that technological shifts consistently create new content forms, with the biggest challenge being audience capture within the first few seconds. Ujjawal Kumar emphasized that emotional connection remains foundational regardless of duration, while Rafael Stemplewski described micro drama as both challenge and opportunity for filmmakers.
The 19th MIFF edition features 1,459 film entries from 47 countries including India, with films showcased in more than 42 Indian languages and over 30 international languages. The festival includes documentaries, short fiction films, animations, debut director films, and student works, alongside industry initiatives like the 2nd edition of Doc Bazaar, masterclasses, and an Open Forum by IDPA.
