The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, is observing World Breastfeeding Week 2026 from August 1st to 7th across the country under the theme 'Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works'. The observance is being carried forward under POSHAN Abhiyaan with awareness activities anchored through Anganwadi Centres, healthcare institutions, community outreach platforms, and digital media across all States and Union Territories.

The campaign focuses on the critical first 1000 days of a child's life, encompassing pregnancy, the first six months after birth, and the period up to twenty-four months of age. The Ministry emphasizes that nutrition, care, and affection received during this window shape brain development, immunity, growth, learning ability, and lifelong wellbeing, positioning breastfeeding as one of the most effective interventions for child survival and healthy development.

Key recommendations include ensuring newborns receive breast milk within the first hour after birth (Golden Hour), with particular emphasis on colostrum - described as the baby's first natural vaccine rich in antibodies and essential nutrients. The Ministry advocates for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months without water, honey, ghutti, glucose, or formula milk, followed by introduction of age-appropriate complementary foods from six months onwards while continuing breastfeeding up to two years and beyond.

Additional guidance covers correct positioning and attachment techniques for breastfeeding, frequent feeding on demand, and support systems through Anganwadi Workers, ASHA workers, and healthcare facilities. Working mothers are being counseled on expressing and safely storing breast milk to ensure uninterrupted feeding. The Ministry calls upon healthcare professionals, community workers, families, and citizens to create an enabling environment that empowers every mother to breastfeed and provides every child with the best possible start in life.
