Monthly Coal Production and Dispatch Performance

The Ministry of Coal reported significant growth in production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal mines during October 2026. Production reached 22.03 million tonnes (MT), representing a 42% year-on-year increase from the 15.49 MT recorded in October 2025. Dispatch volumes stood at 21.11 MT, showing 36% growth compared to the 15.48 MT dispatched in the same period last year.

Cumulative Performance April-October 2026

For the period April to October 2026, the sector maintained sustained momentum with cumulative production reaching 117.23 MT, an 11.30% increase from the 105.33 MT produced during the same period in the previous year. Dispatch during this seven-month period reached 124.86 MT, growing by 11.53% compared to the 111.95 MT dispatched in the April-October 2025 period.

Operational Expansion and Policy Impact

The Lohari coal mine in Jharkhand obtained Mine Opening Permission in October 2026 after awaiting operationalization for several years. This approval increases the total number of operational captive and commercial coal mines to 87. The Ministry attributed this development to its Ease of Doing Business reforms, which have improved operational efficiency, enhanced mining productivity, and enabled more effective utilization of mining capacities across the sector.

Strategic Implications

The rising production from these mines is expected to reduce India's dependence on imported coal, strengthen supply-chain resilience, and conserve foreign exchange. This aligns with the Government's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by enhancing self-sufficiency in a critical raw material for industrial development. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining production growth through progressive policy interventions, robust regulatory oversight, and continued stakeholder support to meet the nation's growing energy and industrial requirements.
