President of India Droupadi Murmu presided over the 12th National Handloom Day celebrations at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, New Delhi, where she presented awards to handloom weavers and released commemorative postage stamps. The ceremony recognized 3 Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and 19 National Handloom Awards for 2025, honoring exceptional craftsmanship and contributions to preserving India's handloom traditions.
In her address, President Murmu emphasized that handloom has been integral to India's civilization for centuries, reflecting national diversity while preserving regional uniqueness. She noted the sector's role in fostering employment, women's empowerment, art and culture, and love for nature. The President stressed that appropriate use of new technologies is essential for sustainable development of the sector, and market access can be improved through modern digital solutions. She observed that many young entrepreneurs with technology and innovative designs are entering the sector and called for proactive hand-holding through government schemes and institutions.
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening the handloom sector through policy support, technology adoption, design innovation, market promotion, skill development, and welfare initiatives. Minister of State Pabitra Margherita highlighted the importance of innovation, youth participation, and expanding global opportunities while preserving rich traditions.
The President released four commemorative postage stamps on Indian handloom weaves and a publication titled "Earth. Root. Thread – Aal Dyed Handloom Textiles of Central India" by the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms. An exhibition showcased award-winning handloom products, and live demonstrations featured traditional Kani weaving and Wall Hanging weaving techniques.
The event commemorated the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on August 7, 1905, which renewed impetus to indigenous industries and India's handloom sector. Since 2015, National Handloom Day has served to recognize the sector's contribution to India's cultural heritage, livelihood generation, and sustainable development.
