Mizoram’s Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line First-Year Operational Review
The Ministry of Railways has released a performance review marking the first anniversary of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025. The 51.38-kilometer line is a significant engineering achievement, comprising 153 bridges (55 major, 88 minor, and 10 ROBs/RUBs) and 45 tunnels spanning nearly 16 kilometers. Six bridges exceed 70 meters in height, with the tallest pier reaching 114 meters. The line connects the national network from Bairabi to four new stations—Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang—effectively bringing rail connectivity to the threshold of Aizawl, Mizoram's capital.
Passenger Mobility and Financials
Passenger services on the line have been highly successful. Three long-distance trains connect Sairang to major cities: the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express (to Delhi), a service to Guwahati, and a service to Kolkata. A passenger train to Silchar, Assam, was added in January 2026. In one year, these services completed over 1,100 trips, carrying more than 15 lakh (1.5 million) passengers. Demand has been exceptionally high, with all trains consistently operating above 100% capacity. The Kolkata service averaged over 140% occupancy, the Guwahati service over 110%, and the Rajdhani Express over 145%. This high passenger volume generated ticket sales totaling ₹54 crore for Indian Railways. Sairang station itself has handled over 5.54 lakh passenger movements, averaging 3,300 visitors per day, and has become a community hub.
Freight and Logistics Impact
The line's impact on freight logistics has been transformative. The first freight rake, carrying over 26,000 bags of cement, arrived at Sairang on September 14, 2025, and had an immediate effect on reducing cement prices in Aizawl. Over the year, more than 2,500 freight wagons were delivered. Approximately 70% of this cargo consisted of construction materials like cement, stone, and sand, supporting local infrastructure development at lower costs. Other significant freight included 156 wagons of automobiles (the first rake with 119 Maruti cars arrived in December 2025), essential commodities like rice, and fertilizers. This shift from road to rail has created a safer, higher-capacity, and more cost-effective supply channel for the region.
Broader Economic and Social Benefits
The railway connectivity has spurred substantial growth in tourism, with the state experiencing an 86% increase in visitors since the line's introduction. This growth supports local businesses, including hotels, homestays, restaurants, and cultural enterprises. For students, the line provides improved access to educational institutions and events outside the state. For local enterprise, the railway has enabled access to national markets; the first parcel consignment of Anthurium flowers was sent to Delhi via the Rajdhani Express on September 19, 2025, creating a direct channel for high-value, time-sensitive local produce.
