Union Minister Inaugurates World's First Integrated Air Pollution Analysis Laboratory
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the world's first-of-its-kind 'Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory' (AATAL) for Delhi NCR on October 24, 2026. The facility represents a significant advancement in air quality management by moving beyond simple AQI measurements to identify real-time sources of pollution, their chemical composition, and potential health implications.
The laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments for analyzing the chemical composition of atmospheric gases and aerosols, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), metals, toxic elements, and other components. It can distinguish between different pollution sources including vehicular emissions (shown contributing approximately 25% during the demonstration), industrial activity, biomass and crop-residue burning, construction and road dust, and pollutants transported from surrounding regions.
AATAL is integrated with IITM's AIRWISE (Air Quality Warning and Integrated Decision Support System for Emissions), which provides air-quality forecasts at a spatial resolution of 400 metres for the next 72 hours. This enables the system to assess how pollution may vary across different pockets of Delhi and identify sources expected to contribute to deteriorating air quality in specific locations.
The facility will support the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and pollution-control agencies by providing measurement-based evidence to identify sources responsible for poor air quality, prioritize sectors and locations for intervention, and support coordinated measures across Delhi-NCR. The real-time information and advance forecasts will help authorities implement targeted interventions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and assess their effectiveness.
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that coordinated action across government departments including the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, pollution-control authorities, and disaster-management agencies is essential for evidence-based air pollution management. The initiative was established under 'Mission Mausam' announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen scientific understanding of atmospheric pollution.
