The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) provided an update on the National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6) conducted during 2023-24. The survey collects comprehensive data on health and family welfare domains including population characteristics, fertility preferences, family planning, maternal and child health, nutrition, morbidity, healthcare, and women's empowerment. The National and State/UT Fact Sheets for NFHS-6 were officially released on May 29, 2026.
The indicators included in the NFHS-6 Fact Sheets were finalized based on recommendations from a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) constituted specifically for NFHS-6. This committee included representatives from multiple government departments including the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Women & Child Development, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India, NITI Aayog, and Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.
The TAC recommended aligning the Fact Sheet indicators with the Government of India's Data Harmonization initiatives to prevent inconsistencies that arise from fragmented and unharmonized data across different official sources. The committee further recommended that the Fact Sheets should present only key indicators, particularly those related to health and family welfare, to better highlight the survey's essential findings.
Additionally, the Ministry decided that anaemia prevalence figures will be derived from an independent survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) using the gold standard intravenous method for haemoglobin testing, rather than including them in the NFHS-6 Fact Sheets. This information was formally communicated by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Anupriya Patel, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on August 4, 2026.
