NESAC's Space Technology Initiatives for Northeast Development
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh visited the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) at Umiam, Meghalaya, and reviewed the institution's expanding role in applying space technology to support both national strategic priorities and socio-economic development of the North Eastern Region. The Centre, under Director Dr. S.P. Aggarwal, is currently implementing nearly 130 space application projects across the Northeast, including 50 recently completed initiatives and 78 ongoing programs.
Strategic and Developmental Applications
NESAC is conducting geospatial mapping of the India-Myanmar border as well as inter-State boundaries within the Northeast, supporting national strategic priorities in border regions. Simultaneously, the Centre is executing technology-driven projects across multiple sectors including agriculture, disaster management, natural resource management, water resources, forestry, geosciences, urban and regional planning, geoinformatics, satellite communication, UAV applications, space and atmospheric sciences, and governance improvement.
Specific Program Initiatives
The Minister called for enhanced collaboration between NESAC, the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), and State Governments to maximize benefits from the ongoing bamboo mapping program, which aims to strengthen the bamboo value chain, facilitate better resource planning, promote value addition, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities. Dr. Singh also emphasized improving the precision and location-specific capability of NESAC's flood early warning system to provide more timely and actionable information to vulnerable communities.
Water Security and Tourism Development
NESAC was encouraged to work with State Governments for wider adoption of successful water harvesting models, including the initiative implemented at the Ramakrishna Mission in Cherrapunjee, to enhance long-term water security in the region. The Minister also directed strengthening of the GeoTourism 'ManzilNE' dashboard by facilitating greater private tourism sector participation to promote the Northeast's natural, ecological and cultural heritage.
Collaborative Framework and Future Direction
Dr. Singh called for deeper partnerships with Central Ministries, State Governments, research institutions, academia, start-ups, private industry, and other stakeholders to accelerate adoption of space-based applications across sectors. He emphasized that NESAC has evolved into a vital institution bridging cutting-edge scientific capabilities with the developmental aspirations of the eight Northeastern States, enabling space technology to become an effective tool for planning, governance, resource management and public service delivery.
