National Film Development Corporation-National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI) has successfully restored filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak's complete feature filmography in 4K format.
Partnership with British Film Institute (BFI) for a historical exhibition at BFI Southbank in London starting June 2026.
The restoration project used various original film elements preserved for decades by NFDC-NFAI and resources from West Bengal State Film Archive.
Color grading process was directly supervised by National Award-winning Indian cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay.
Eight feature films restored: Nagarik, Ajantrik, Bari Theke Paliye, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar, Subarnarekha, Titas Ekti Nadir Naam, and Jukti Takko Aar Gappo.
The showcase will include historically important short format works, documentaries, and rare unfinished works including Scenic Beauty of Bihar, Musafir, Fear, The Meeting Place, Civil Defence, Scientists of Tomorrow, Why, My Lenin, Puruliar Chhau, Darbar Gati Padma, Heerer Prajapati, Chinnamul, Ramkinker Baij, Runger Golam, and Bagalar Banga Darshan.
NFDC-NFAI has been a member of the International Federation of Film Archives since 1969.
Research and documentation section contains: Over 200,000 photographs, 40,000 film posters, 24,000 song booklets, and 228,000 press clippings.
National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM) was launched in 2015 for film conservation efforts.
Under NFHM, NFDC-NFAI performs 2K and 4K digitization and restoration of historical Indian films.
NFHM activities include: Assessing condition of film reels, developing archival storage, and building institutional capacity through training and workshops.
