Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated the TAKSHANAM exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi on October 15, 2026. The exhibition features over 250 sculptures created by 150 participating artists representing diverse generations and artistic backgrounds. Secretary of Ministry of Culture Shri Vivek Aggarwal and NGMA Director General Dr. Sanjeev Kishor Goutam were also present at the inauguration ceremony.

The exhibition is conceived as a platform for artistic encounter and exchange, exploring continuities, transitions, and new possibilities in Indian sculpture. The name TAKSHANAM is inspired by the Sanskrit root 'takṣ' meaning to carve, shape, and fashion. The exhibition is divided into two sections: Eminent Artists showcasing works by experienced and veteran practitioners, and Open Call Artists featuring approximately 80-90 artists selected through a jury process following an open call. The exhibition also includes artworks from NGMA's permanent collection.

A significant initiative introduced with this exhibition is the first-time sale of artworks at NGMA, aimed at creating opportunities for artists to reach collectors and art enthusiasts while encouraging wider engagement with sculptural art. This move seeks to contribute to the sustainability of artistic practice, particularly in sculpture which involves substantial material costs, specialized skills, and long production timelines.

The exhibition celebrates India's sculptural heritage ranging from Harappan and Mohenjo-daro civilizations with their terracotta and metal objects to temple architecture traditions at Ajanta, Ellora, and Khajuraho, while also recognizing contemporary practitioners who have achieved international recognition. TAKSHANAM will remain open to visitors until November 15, 2026, at NGMA's Jaipur House location near India Gate in New Delhi.
