The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, through the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has launched 'OneTag' - a FASTag portability service on the Rajmargyatra Mobile App as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. This initiative enables FASTag users to change their issuer bank while retaining the existing physical tag affixed to their vehicle, eliminating the need to obtain a new physical tag. The service expands the citizen-centric offerings on the Rajmargyatra App, which already includes FASTag Annual Pass, FASTag Local Pass, and Emergency Helpline 1033 services.
The portability process requires users to log into the app, enter their vehicle registration number to check eligibility, and receive a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) from their current issuer bank. After authorization, users select a new issuer, complete customer verification, and undergo wallet onboarding with the new issuer. Following successful portability, the existing FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number remains unchanged, allowing continued use of the same physical tag with the new issuer bank.
After portability completion, the previous issuer closes the existing FASTag wallet and refunds the available balance post applicable adjustments. The interoperable FASTag features a cooling period of 6 months before it can be ported again. The initiative improves FASTag lifecycle management by reducing repeated tag production, thereby lowering operational costs, dispatching expenses, and reissuance costs. It also streamlines the issuer-switching journey, enhances customer choice, and contributes to a more interoperable and efficient FASTag ecosystem.
FASTag has achieved a penetration rate of over 98% with approximately 13 crore users, having revolutionized the Electronic Toll Collection system in India. The introduction of OneTag further strengthens the digital tolling architecture while providing greater flexibility and convenience to National Highway users by allowing them to retain their existing physical tags during bank switches.
