The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a nationwide initiative to develop world-class public toilet facilities at toll plazas across the National Highway network. This initiative introduces a hybrid performance-based contract framework designed to ensure superior hygiene standards, digital monitoring, and commuter-centric maintenance.
The program involves both renovation of existing toilet blocks and creation of new facilities using standardized, indigenously developed designs that combine robust structural features with sustainable green building infrastructure. The enhanced sanitation facilities aim to provide clean, safe, and accessible public amenities while ensuring uniform quality standards across the entire National Highway network.
A technology-driven maintenance framework has been adopted, integrating Internet of Things (IoT) based live telemetry systems for real-time monitoring of maintenance parameters, enabling proactive upkeep and efficient service delivery. The framework includes a performance-linked payment mechanism with accountability measures through automated Service Level Agreements (SLAs), periodic independent audits, and verified commuter feedback received through NHAI's 'Rajmargyatra' Mobile App.
In compliance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016, all new facilities will incorporate universal accessibility features to ensure barrier-free access for persons with disabilities. The facilities will prioritize clean water supply, modern sanitation infrastructure, and enhanced hygiene standards, with dedicated provisions designed to ensure the safety and privacy of women travellers. The initiative aims to significantly enhance travel experience while setting new benchmarks for public amenities on the National Highway network.
