Varuna Elevated Corridor: ₹10,998 Crore Infrastructure Project for Varanasi

The Union Cabinet has approved the ₹10,998-crore Varuna Elevated Corridor project in Varanasi, which will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. The 43.218-kilometer predominantly elevated corridor will feature 6/4 lanes and connect NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road along the Varuna River, providing an alternative high-capacity route through the city.

The project comprises a main carriageway, flyovers, loops, ramps, service roads, an iconic cable-stayed bridge, and an extradosed foot over bridge-cum-major bridge. The budget allocation includes ₹4,565.33 crore for civil construction and ₹934.91 crore for land acquisition.

Key Transportation Benefits and Connectivity Improvements

The corridor forms a critical component of the Varanasi Decongestion Plan and is designed for speeds of 80–100 kmph. It will significantly reduce travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from approximately 40 minutes to nearly 20 minutes, while the journey between Varanasi Junction and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is projected to decrease from nearly an hour to around 20 minutes.

The project will improve access to key transport gateways including Varanasi Airport, Varanasi Cantonment, Varanasi City Railway Station, Kashi Railway Station, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, and Ramnagar Port. It will also enhance connectivity to major religious and tourism destinations such as the ghats and Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, as well as educational institutions including Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.

Economic and Regional Development Impact

Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the corridor will strengthen Varanasi's role as a regional logistics and economic center by improving access to the Chandauli Socio-Economic Zone, Chandauli Social Node, and six major logistics nodes. The improved infrastructure will facilitate movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, construction materials, and minerals between Varanasi, Chandauli, and adjoining regions.

The project is expected to ease traffic congestion at major bottlenecks including Varanasi Junction, Phulwaria, and Chaukaghat, while providing faster and more predictable journeys for residents, pilgrims, tourists, students, and businesses. During major festivals and peak pilgrimage periods, the additional road capacity will help distribute traffic more efficiently and reduce pressure on key urban corridors.
