The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) inaugurated its four-week in-person Summer Internship Programme 2026 in New Delhi on June 1, 2026, targeting postgraduate-level students to foster human rights awareness. The programme selected 100 students from 1,668 applicants representing diverse academic disciplines including Law, Social Sciences, Social Work, Psychology, Journalism, Gender Studies, Digital Humanities, and International Relations. These interns come from 40 institutions across 21 states and union territories, creating what the NHRC describes as a 'Mini India' representation.
NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian emphasized the enduring importance of human rights values despite technological revolutions, noting that the programme aims to develop greater empathy, awareness, and commitment toward human rights among participants. Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi highlighted the cultural exchange opportunity and encouraged interns to become voices for the voiceless. Member Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani connected human rights to ancient Indian concepts of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and urged viewing the internship as value-based learning rather than just academic exercise.
Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal stated the NHRC's significant investment in nurturing young minds through both in-person and online programmes, with the objective to create a new generation of leadership committed to human rights, human values, and social responsibility. The programme includes interactive sessions, group research projects, book reviews, declamation contests, and field visits to Police Stations, Tihar Jail, SHEOWS' home for the elderly, and other National Commissions to provide practical understanding of human rights issues.
