The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India commenced its two-week Online Short-Term Internship Programme (OSTI) at Manav Adhikar Bhawan, New Delhi, selecting 100 university-level students from 2,036 applicants across diverse academic backgrounds. The program was inaugurated by NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian in the presence of Member Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Secretary General Shri Piyush Goyal, and other senior officials.
Justice Ramasubramanian highlighted the privileged position of Indian youth who have access to basic human rights like food, education, and shelter, contrasting this with global conflicts affecting millions worldwide. He cited the Global Peace Index 2025, noting 130 armed conflicts globally (the highest since World War II), 98 countries facing external conflicts, 122 million people forcibly displaced, and approximately $20 trillion in global economic damage from these conflicts.
The internship program aims to sensitize young people about human rights through approximately 30 lectures delivered by 20 eminent guest speakers including senior government officials, academicians, civil society representatives, human rights defenders, and international institution representatives. Participants will receive virtual tours of a Police Station, Tihar Prison, and Asha Kiran Shelter Home to understand their functioning and challenges. The program also includes a book review competition, group research project presentation, and declamation contest.
Justice Sarangi emphasized that the right to life with dignity under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution is a fundamental right and encouraged interns to apply their learning for societal benefit. Secretary General Goyal noted that the online format enhances inclusivity by removing geographical and financial barriers, enabling nationwide participation. The program seeks to develop participants into conscientious citizens who uphold human dignity and promote justice and equality in their academic, professional, and personal lives.
