The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report dated 30th June 2026 regarding medical negligence at Banda Civil Hospital in Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh. The case involves a one-and-a-half-year-old toddler who lost his eyesight allegedly due to medical error when doctors administered nasal drops into his eyes instead of providing appropriate treatment for his cold and eye redness condition.
The Commission observed that the contents of the news report, if verified as true, raise serious issues of human rights violation. In response, the NHRC has issued a formal notice to the Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary, demanding a detailed report on the incident within two weeks from the notice date of 3rd July 2026.
According to the media report, following the initial incident at Banda Civil Hospital, the child was taken to the District Hospital for further treatment and subsequently to AIIMS, Bhopal. However, medical authorities at AIIMS Bhopal informed the family that the child's eyesight could not be restored despite these additional medical interventions.
The NHRC's intervention represents regulatory oversight action in response to alleged medical malpractice, with the Commission seeking official documentation and explanation from the state administration regarding the circumstances and response to this medical negligence case.
