NITI Aayog launched a comprehensive report titled "Strategic Roadmap for Making Ayurveda Global" on July 2, 2026, presenting a detailed assessment of Ayurveda's global footprint and outlining a phased roadmap for international expansion. The report was released by Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, in the presence of Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas (Member, NITI Aayog), Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha (Secretary, Ministry of Ayush), and senior officials from multiple government bodies including Ministry of External Affairs, research institutions, and industry associations.
Dr. Lahiri emphasized that Ayurveda's globalization presents a unique opportunity to establish India as a global leader in traditional medicine while unlocking substantial economic value through job creation, export strengthening, and reinforcing India's cultural and knowledge-based soft power. He stressed that achieving this vision requires a whole-of-government approach ensuring coordinated and time-bound implementation.
The report adopts a three-pillar strategic framework: Availability (covering globalized practice and workforce, exports and manufacturing, international R&D, and standardized global education), Acceptability (including regulatory compliance, international collaborations, insurance coverage, and cultural adaptability), and Propagation (encompassing strategic brand positioning, global visibility, medical value travel, and presence in global bodies). The roadmap proposes a phased implementation strategy extending up to 2047, aligned with India's Viksit Bharat@2047 vision.
The study was conducted by NITI Aayog's Health Division in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), drawing upon extensive stakeholder consultations, international benchmarking, and evidence-based analysis to identify opportunities and challenges. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha highlighted the Ministry of Ayush's existing initiatives and substantial progress in promoting global acceptance of Ayurveda over the past decade, noting that the report's recommendations would complement these efforts.
The report aims to serve as a resource for policymakers, researchers, industry stakeholders, practitioners, and international partners, facilitating evidence-informed policymaking and coordinated action to strengthen India's position as a global leader in traditional medicine. It reflects India's commitment to the "One Earth, One Health" vision and advancing global well-being through traditional knowledge systems.
