Northeast India EV Adoption Under FAME-II Scheme
The Ministry of Heavy Industries provided detailed data on electric vehicle adoption in Northeast India under the FAME-II scheme, implemented from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2024, in response to a Lok Sabha question.
Total EV sales in the Northeast states reached 18,986 vehicles during 2022-23 to 2024-25, with Assam dominating at 10,990 vehicles (2,108 in 2022-23 and 8,882 in 2023-24). Tripura followed with 6,767 EVs, while Meghalaya (502), Manipur (368), Mizoram (328), Arunachal Pradesh (16), Sikkim (9), and Nagaland (6) showed significantly lower adoption rates.
Subsidy disbursement under FAME-II totaled ₹134.13 crore for 20,855 incentivized EVs across the Northeast region, representing 1.29% of total vehicles and 2.04% of total incentives disbursed pan-India (which stood at ₹6,575.29 crore for 16,21,197 vehicles). Assam received the largest share at ₹71.23 crore for 11,776 vehicles, followed by Tripura (₹55.67 crore for 7,765 vehicles), Manipur (₹3.17 crore for 505 vehicles), Meghalaya (₹2.93 crore for 452 vehicles), Mizoram (₹0.97 crore for 324 vehicles), Arunachal Pradesh (₹0.08 crore for 15 vehicles), Sikkim (₹0.05 crore for 10 vehicles), and Nagaland (₹0.03 crore for 8 vehicles).
Charging infrastructure development shows 117 EV public charging stations sanctioned in Assam with 88 operational as of July 1, 2026. Additionally, 198 EV chargers are being installed through Oil Marketing Companies across the Northeast region: 117 in Assam, 29 in Meghalaya, 23 in Nagaland, 14 in Manipur, 7 in Mizoram, 5 in Tripura, and 3 in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Ministry clarified that no state-wise allocation was made under the pan-India FAME-II scheme, and according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, no special framework exists for electric vehicles under the recently launched Modified UDAN Scheme.
