The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers provided an update on the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) as of June 30, 2026, revealing that 20,149 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been established nationwide, including 1,833 specifically in Kerala. The Kerala distribution shows Thiruvananthapuram leading with 191 centers, followed by Ernakulam (221) and Thrissur (219), while Wayanad has the fewest at 29.
The scheme's product portfolio encompasses 2,110 medicines and 315 surgical items, medical consumables, and devices across major therapeutic categories such as cardiovascular, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-infectives, anti-allergic, gastro-intestinal medicines, and nutraceuticals. Financially, PMBJP achieved sales of ₹7,873.85 crore over the last five fiscal years (2021-22 to 2025-26), resulting in approximately ₹37,200 crore in savings for citizens through affordable pricing.
Operationally, the government employs a franchise model allowing individuals, NGOs, trusts, firms, and private companies to apply via www.janaushadhi.gov.in. To enhance coverage in underserved areas, PMBI actively requests free space in government hospitals from local administrations. Supply chain robustness is maintained through an IT-enabled system connecting five warehouses and 42 distributors, with incentivized stocking of 200 high-demand medicines to ensure availability. Quality control mandates procurement exclusively from WHO-GMP certified manufacturers, 100% pre-dispatch batch testing at PMBI warehouses, and exclusive use of NABL-accredited laboratories assessed for GLP compliance.
