Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi led the national observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga from Red Road in Kolkata, West Bengal on June 21, 2026. The Prime Minister participated in the Common Yoga Protocol session along with thousands of yoga practitioners, marking the longest day of the year in several parts of the world and what has emerged as one of the largest collective celebrations of humanity through yoga.

The event carried special significance for West Bengal due to the state's rich spiritual and cultural heritage, being the land where Bhagwan Ramakrishna Paramahansa lived and taught, where Swami Vivekananda introduced India's spiritual wisdom to the world, and where Maharshi Aurobindo and Lahiri Mahasaya contributed to yogic thought. The Prime Minister also referenced Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's teachings about meaningful connections with the world.

This year's International Day of Yoga theme was "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," which the Prime Minister emphasized is relevant for people of all ages, not just the elderly. He stated that healthy ageing means ensuring that advancing years do not diminish human potential, and that yoga encourages continuous growth and self-improvement throughout life. The Prime Minister outlined aspirations that individuals should strive to be more flexible at forty than at twenty, more energetic at fifty than at thirty, and more resilient to lifestyle-related diseases at seventy than at fifty.

The Prime Minister highlighted yoga's benefits for improving flexibility, sustaining energy levels, reducing stress, promoting mental well-being, and preventing lifestyle disorders. He noted that regular yoga practice transforms individuals into lifelong learners of their own bodies and minds, leading to better self-management and healthier lifestyles. Quoting the Bhagavad Gita, he emphasized that balanced food habits, recreation, actions, and sleep patterns enable yoga to become a means of overcoming suffering.

The Yoga 365 initiative reported significant global participation with over three million people from 130 countries participating in a 100-day online yoga program. The Prime Minister called for making yoga an integral part of everyday life rather than restricting it to a single day or event, emphasizing that a healthy society lays the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous, and more confident nation. He concluded with the ancient prayer "Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah" (May all be happy, may all be free from illness).
