Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana Achievement Update
The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Department of Pharmaceuticals, provided a comprehensive update on the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) as of June 30, 2026. A total of 20,149 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been established across India, with significant penetration in Kerala where 1,833 centers are operational. The district-wise distribution in Kerala shows Thiruvananthapuram leading with 191 centers, followed by Ernakulam (221), Thrissur (219), Malappuram (187), Palakkad (177), Kozhikode (159), Alappuzha (138), Kollam (127), Kottayam (114), Kannur (106), Idukki (62), Pathanamthitta (60), Kasaragod (43), and Wayanad (29).
The scheme offers an extensive product basket containing 2,110 medicines and 315 surgical items, medical consumables, and devices covering major therapeutic categories including cardiovascular, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-infectives, anti-allergic, gastro-intestinal medicines, and nutraceuticals.
Financial performance data reveals that during the five-year period from 2021-22 to 2025-26, PMBJP achieved sales of ₹7,873.85 crore through these Kendras, resulting in estimated citizen savings of approximately ₹37,200 crore due to the affordable pricing model.
Operational Framework and Expansion Strategy
The government employs a franchise-like model for JAK establishment, allowing participation from individual entrepreneurs, NGOs, societies, trusts, firms, and private companies through applications submitted via the official website (www.janaushadhi.gov.in). To enhance coverage in underserved areas, the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) actively corresponds with local administration and district magistrates to secure free space within government hospital premises for prospective applicants.
Supply Chain and Availability Measures
Multiple measures ensure consistent product availability: since September 2024, JAK owners receive monthly incentives for maintaining stocks of 200 commonly used medicines comprising the scheme's top 100 sellers and 100 fast-moving market medicines. The supply chain infrastructure includes five warehouses and 42 distributors nationwide, connected through an end-to-end IT-enabled system. PMBI continuously monitors 400 fast-moving products, employing digitized demand estimation methods to optimize procurement processes and prevent shortages.
Quality Assurance Protocols
Rigorous quality control mechanisms ensure medication safety: procurement is restricted exclusively to WHO-GMP certified manufacturers. Every medicine batch undergoes 100% pre-testing at PMBI warehouses, with dispatch permitted only after successful quality verification. Testing occurs exclusively in NABL-accredited laboratories that additionally comply with Good Laboratory Practices as assessed by PMBI.
