The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced through Union Minister Bhupender Yadav that Project Great Indian Bustard (GIB) has added three new chicks to its conservation breeding program, bringing the total captive stock to 94 birds. The three new chicks emerged from one wild-collected egg and two captive-laid eggs. In the fourth year of the captive breeding program, 26 chicks have hatched so far, with breakdown showing 18 through artificial insemination, four through natural breeding, and four from wild-collected eggs. Additionally, three chicks have hatched in the wild in Rajasthan through jumpstart intervention, which serves to improve founder genetic diversity and mitigate predation risks. The announcement was made on June 14, 2026, through the Press Information Bureau, with the minister sharing the development on social media platform X. More chicks are expected this breeding season.
