Railways Inaugurate Kailaras-Birpur Gauge Conversion in Madhya Pradesh

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, virtually inaugurated the gauge-converted 56-km Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section and flagged off the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service up to Birpur on August 18, 2026. This infrastructure development significantly enhances rail connectivity in the Gwalior-Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh.

The gauge conversion project provides direct rail connectivity to Birpur, Vijaypur, and Sabalgarh with Gwalior, offering more affordable and convenient travel options for passengers from rural and tribal areas. Residents of over 100 villages across Bamor, Joura, Kailaras, and Sabalgarh tehsils of Morena district, and Birpur, Sheopur, and Karahal tehsils of Sheopur district will benefit from this improved connectivity. The extension is expected to improve access to Gwalior for education, healthcare, and employment opportunities while boosting local trade and regional economic activities.

Project Progress and Future Connectivity

The railway development in the region has been implemented in phases, with the Birlanagar-Birpur section progressing rapidly in recent years. The commissioning timeline shows: Birlanagar-Rayaru (11 km) opened in May 2023, Rayaru-Sumaoli (22 km) in August 2023, Sumaoli-Joura (14 km) in November 2023, Joura-Kailaras (14 km) in February 2024, Kailaras-Sabalgarh (29 km) in 2025, and Sabalgarh-Birpur (27 km) in 2026. Work on the next sections from Birpur to Seroni Road (37 km) and from Seroni Road to Sheopur Kalan (33 km) is almost complete, with the entire Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan railway line expected to be completed within the next few months. The ultimate plan is to extend connectivity to Kota, connecting the region with major educational and industrial centers.

Railway Investment and Development in Madhya Pradesh

The railway budget for Madhya Pradesh has increased significantly from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27, representing a nearly 24-fold increase. Currently, railway projects worth approximately ₹1.55 lakh crore are underway in the state, including 80 stations being redeveloped, operation of five Vande Bharat trains connecting the state, and introduction of seven Amrit Bharat trains. Major new projects include the Manmad-Indore new line and multiple third and fourth-line projects across the state, with projects connected to Madhya Pradesh approved during the current government's third term amounting to approximately ₹64,512 crore.

Broader Railway Development Initiatives

Since 2014, Indian Railways has recruited more than 5.54 lakh personnel, emphasizing railway electrification and modernization as key government priorities. The electrification initiative has reduced Indian Railways' dependence on diesel and helped decrease expenditure on imported fuel. The Kailaras section currently provides transport facilities to around 10,000 people daily, with the extension expected to further expand the railway's reach and benefit a larger population.

Regional Economic Impact

The project is expected to contribute to the development of a new industrial belt and benefit tourism and other economic activities in the Gwalior-Chambal region. The region shows potential in sectors such as battery energy storage, footwear, hydrogen manufacturing, and tourism, with improved rail connectivity expected to support these emerging sectors. The extension of rail connectivity from Gwalior towards Shivpuri and Sheopur is anticipated to create a new dimension of development for Gwalior and the wider region, supported by ongoing doubling, tripling, and quadrupling of railway lines across the state.
